Over the years, we have held several family events at our house that were exciting. We have had a wedding ceremony, a family reunion with 75 people, a 40th Birthday party with a DJ, many Thanksgiving meals with 50 people and the usual Easter, Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties.
Recently, my wife came up with another idea. As it gets closer to the time for schools to have their annual prom, my wife thought having a family prom would be fun. Several of our older grandkids never went to prom, and some of the younger ones do not intend on going. My wife thought that maybe if we had a family prom at home, they would feel comfortable attending.
So, she set out planning how to do it. She enlisted our oldest daughter to do the planning and decorating, and the rest of us did our part to help her out. Invitations were sent out and we were all getting excited thinking about how the evening would turn out.
We hired a good DJ to set up in our upstairs loft. We rearranged all the furniture to provide a dance floor, and set up snack tables and other tables and chairs for people to sit and talk.
When the time for the big event finally arrived, 36 people showed up. Some of the girls were in prom dresses, some casual, some of the guys were casual and others wore tuxedo t-shirts. Everyone brought food or snacks, so we were set for the evening.
The music started right at 7 and it did not take long for a few people to hit the dance floor. Others mingled and ate while they enjoyed watching those who were dancing. As the evening went on, more people joined in dancing. Personally, I am not a dancer but I always make sure to get a few slow dances in with my beautiful wife.
The evening slowed down at 10 when the DJ was finished, but a couple of our daughters were not ready to be done and put more music on the radio and continued dancing until they were worn out.
By 11, most everyone was ready to head home and relax. It was certainly a fun and enjoyable evening and I think everyone had a great time. It was so good to have our family together enjoying a good time in a safe environment. It was definitely another successful family event at our house. The only thought now is, what will we do next?
